# Hey August Co — Audit Data (raw measurements)

Site: https://heyaugustco.com — Shopify "Showcase 7.1.6" theme.
Audited: 2026-09-27.

## Site inventory (from sitemap)
- **47 products**
- **19 collections** (several appear duplicate/overlapping: `beanies`,
  `beanies-1`, `beanies-2`, `beanies-for-kids`, `beanies-for-adults`;
  `caps`, `all-caps`, `adventure-caps`, `caps-for-kids-1`, `caps-for-adults-1`)
- **10 static pages**: about-us, sizing, contact-us, wholesale, charity,
charity-1 (duplicate slug), sale, data-sharing-opt-out, about (duplicate
  of about-us?), faqs
- **1 blog** (`/blogs/news`) — sitemap `lastmod` is **2021-05-23**, five
years stale as of this audit.

## robots.txt
Standard Shopify-generated robots.txt. Notably includes explicit AI-agent
commerce instructions (`agents.md`, UCP/MCP endpoints, a `shop.app/SKILL.md`
recommendation) — this store has adopted Shopify's newer agentic-commerce
plumbing, which is unusual for a small brand and worth noting as a real
technical positive even though most of the audit is critical.

## Head / meta (homepage)
- `<title>`: `HEY AUGUST CO &ndash; Hey August co` — **unescaped HTML
entity artifact** (`&ndash;` renders literally in some contexts/tab
titles) and the brand name is duplicated redundantly.
- `<meta name="description">`: **"Made for everyday kids."** — 4 words,
far below the ~150-160 character effective length for a search snippet.
- Canonical: present and correct (`https://heyaugustco.com/`).
- `<meta name="robots">`: **not present** (not necessarily a problem, but
  no explicit signal either way).
- Open Graph tags: 9 present.
- Viewport: correctly set.
- **JSON-LD structured data: 0 blocks found anywhere on the homepage.**
  No `Product`, `Organization`, `BreadcrumbList`, or `WebSite` schema —
a real, fixable SEO gap for an e-commerce site with 47 real products.
- H1: `<h1 class="logo logo-h1">` — the H1 is the **logo/wordmark**, not a
real page headline. No descriptive H1 content on the homepage.

## Lighthouse (mobile, simulated throttling, local run)
| Category | Score |
|---|---|
| Performance | **52** |
| Accessibility | 87 |
| Best Practices | 79 |
| SEO | 100 |

Core Web Vitals:
- FCP: 2.6s
- **LCP: 10.9s** — very poor (Google's "good" threshold is <2.5s; this is
  over 4x that)
- TBT: 310ms
- CLS: 0.164 (above the 0.1 "good" threshold)
- Speed Index: 6.2s

Page weight: **2,570 KB total**, 246 requests.
- scripts: 44 requests / 802.8 KB
- images: 12 requests / 471.3 KB
- fonts: 6 requests / 215.1 KB
- **third-party: 60 requests / 470.3 KB** (18% of all requests are
  third-party — apps/trackers, a common Shopify bloat pattern)

Opportunities flagged by Lighthouse:
- **Unused JavaScript: ~253 KB** could be trimmed
- **Unused/unoptimized images: ~220 KB** potential savings

Failed binary audits:
- `aria-dialog-name` — dialogs (likely cart/search overlays) lack
  accessible names
- `aria-toggle-field-name` — toggle fields lack accessible names
- **`heading-order`** — heading elements skip levels (fails a11y)
- **`link-name`** — some links have no discernible/accessible text
- `target-size` — touch targets too small/too close together (mobile
  tap-target usability)
- `third-party-cookies` — uses third-party cookies
- `inspector-issues` — Chrome DevTools Issues panel logged problems

## Conversion vocabulary scan (homepage)
| Term | Count |
|---|---:|
| quote | 0 |
| pricing | 0 |
| get started | 1 |
| schedule | 4 (false positive — "5-panel" pattern match, not real CTA use) |
| book now | 0 |
| gift | 0 |

**CTA label variety: exactly 2 distinct labels found — "Add to Cart" /
"Add to cart"** (case variants of the same single CTA). No secondary CTAs
(gift guide, size guide prominence, bundle/set upsell) on the homepage.

## Proof / trust scan
- Images on homepage: **24 total, 21 missing/empty `alt` text** (87.5%) —
both an accessibility failure and an SEO miss (Google Images can't
  index what it can't read).
- "review" mentions: 0 (word never appears)
- "testimonial" mentions: 27 (this is boilerplate from the review-app
widget's own UI labels, not actual customer testimonials rendered)
- Review platform: **Judge.me is installed** (`star-rating` widget
present, 2 instances) but appears essentially unused — the single
product page checked (`splash-proof-5-panel-hat-in-sunshine`, one of
the top sitemap entries) showed **exactly 1 review** on the page.
- "As seen in" / "featured in" / press mentions: **0**
- Certifications/safety claims: **0** — notably absent given the product
category (sun hats) would benefit from a stated **UPF/SPF rating**,
which never appears anywhere on the audited product page despite the
product description mentioning "water resistant" material.
- Founder/brand story: present but thin — "Our Story" appears once on
the about-us page; "mom" appears once. A homepage trust badge does say
**"Female Founded"** (a genuine positive, but underdeveloped — no name,
no photo, no story link from that badge).

## Product page detail (sampled: splash-proof-5-panel-hat-in-sunshine)
- Price: **$30.00**, displayed clearly near the top.
- Rating widget shows **1 review** — visible but not compelling as social
  proof at n=1.
- Sizing: **inline text description** (Infant/Toddler/Youth/Adult ranges
given in prose), plus a separate "Size Guide" link — reasonable, though
not visual (no size chart table/image on the page itself).
- Material info: **"durable & water resistant nylon material"** — present,
but no UPF rating, no care instructions (wash/dry) visible.
- Photography: 3 real images (product flat-lay, lifestyle beach shots of
a child wearing the hat) — genuine, warm, real-feeling photography, a
  real asset for this brand.
- **"Pay over time... with shop"** (Shop Pay installments) — present,
  a real modern checkout convenience.
- Email capture popup present mid-scroll on the product page itself
("Hey! It's nice to meet you!" — 10% off signup) — reasonable practice,
though appearing on a product page mid-decision (not just homepage) may
interrupt purchase intent rather than support it.

## Site-wide price range (sampled from one product page's related/upsell
module)
Prices observed: $15, $16, $30, $32, $35, $49.99, $50, $150, $999.99.
**The $150 and $999.99 values are almost certainly Shop Pay
installment-plan or bundle-limit placeholders, not real product prices**
— worth flagging as a possible display bug (a parent seeing "$999.99"
anywhere near a kids' sun hat page is a real trust red flag even if it's
technically a backend threshold value, not an actual SKU price) — **needs
confirmation with the client**, not asserted as fact here.

## Screenshots captured
- `before/home-desktop.png` (1440×3000)
- `before/home-mobile.png` (390×844)
- `before/product-desktop.png` (1440×3400, splash-proof-5-panel-hat page)

## Visual critique (via vision_analyze)
**Homepage:** Real, warm, genuine lifestyle photography (an actual family,
not stock) — a real brand asset. However: the H1 is the logo only, so
there's no actual value-proposition headline reinforcing what makes this
brand different; below the hero, four photo tiles use inconsistent
photo-quality/lighting treatment (the "Five Panels" and "Adventure Caps"
tiles look professionally shot and color-graded, "Socks" and "Beanies"
look more like ungraded phone snapshots) — this inconsistency reads as
templated/thrown-together rather than curated. Trust badges ("Female
Founded", "Unique Style") are present but generic icon-style, not backed
by any expanded story on the same page.

**Product page:** Pricing is clear and prominent. But the single "1
review" is visually present and actually undermines trust more than
having no rating widget at all — a parent sees explicit proof that almost
nobody else has bought/reviewed this specific product. No UPF/SPF claim
despite this being a sun-hat category where that's the single most
relevant purchase-decision fact for a parent. Photography on the PDP is
strong (real kid, real beach, genuine joy) — consistent with the
homepage's best tiles.
